Hyundai Motor India (HMI) plans to launch diesel variants of its recently launched compact cars – i10 and i20 – to get a larger chunk in the smaller car market, said a senior executive with HMI.

The Indian subsidiary of Hyundai, which has a 25% market share in the 800,000 small car segment in the country, already makes diesel version of these vehicles at its Chennai plant for exports. But in India, Hyundai markets only the petrol variant.

“We will launch the i20 diesel for the domestic market this year. But we are yet to finalise the engine size,” a senior company executive said. The company will initially launch the i20 diesel and the smaller i10 car’s diesel variant will be introduced in the domestic market later.

A person who tracks large passenger car makers in the country said, Hyundai may strap the 1.4 litre CRDi diesel engine in the i20 premium hatchback, which is currently being exported to Europe and other overseas markets. The smaller engine will allow Hyundai to take advantage of concessional 8% excise duty levied on smaller cars.

The diesel version of i20 is expected to be priced between Rs 5-6 lakh, 20-25% more than the petrol version. The 1.4 litre CRDi engine that offers an 88 BHP of power is expected to deliver a fuel efficiency of around 20 km per litre of fuel.

Hyundai also has a more powerful 1.6 litre diesel version, which is exported, but may not be launched in India due to its high price.

The i20 diesel is expected to come in twin variants. These will be pitted against the hugely popular Maruti’s Swift Diesel, Skoda’s Fabia, Tata Motors’ Indigo, Ford’s Fusion and Fiat’s Palio in the diesel hatchback segment.

Diesel cars are gaining popularity due to their superior fuel efficiency over petrol and lower price of diesel in India. The sales of diesel powered vehicles has doubled to around 30% of the total 1.5 million Indian passenger vehicle market in the past three years.

Hyundai Motor India on Monday announced the launch of the new Verna with luxurious interiors and improved exterior features to further enhance its appeal to customers. With prices (ex-showroom) ranging from Rs 637,700 to Rs 865,350, the new Verna has been introduced in four variants and six new colours.

Commenting on the launch, H S Lheem, managing director, HMIL, said, “Hyundai Verna is a proven success in India and the new variant which also comes with an automatic transmission
– a first for this segment — will further enhance customer delight and satisfaction. With the launch of the new Verna, we have once again raised the competitive bar for style, performance, safety and driving dynamics in India’s mid-size car segment.”

The new Verna range includes two petrol variants – 1.6 VTVT & 1.6 SX VTVT – and two diesel variants – 1.5 CRDi VGT & 1.5 SX CRDi VGT. In addition, Hyundai has also introduced automatic transmission in VGT SX variant, making it the first diesel A/T in its segment. Developed for a demanding segment of Indian consumers, the automatic version provides economy of diesel and the convenience of an automatic transmission
in the same package.

According to the company, the 1.6 litre petrol variant develops an impressive 103.2PS@5500 rpm as maximum power and 14.9 kgm@3000 rpm of maximum torque. The 1.5 litre diesel variant develops a whopping power output of 110 ps@4000 rpm and an impressive torque of 24 kgm@1900 – 2750 rpm. The top end diesel variant will be available with both a 5-speed manual and a 4-speed automatic transmission.

While the engine and the mechanicals remain the same, the new Verna brings in a host of new features. It offers, for instance, aerodynamic styling on the exteriors with a stylish new radiator grille, electrically adjustable ORVM, new chrome insert in waistline moulding, rear chrome garnish and a new full wheel cover for enhanced visual appeal.

The interiors of the new Verna boast several significant design revisions with premium, sophisticated new fabrics and detailed improvements in quality and finish. The audio console has been upgraded too and boasts of a high fidelity 2 DIN Music System with 4 speakers and 2 tweeters. It also incorporates safety features like ABS.

To add to these features, the new Verna comes in six new colours to choose from: Blushing Red, Stone Black, Crystal White, Champagne Gold, Sleek Silver & Deep Ocean Blue.
